Friday Mar 6, 2026 - P20 Anderson Road in the Greenbelt

Four dedicated RA members turned out to ski from P20 on Anderson Road in the Greenbelt. After Ottawa's recent mild spell, the tracks were icy, but in otherwise good condition. The skiers travelled 4.3 km. at a leisurely pace. With warm temperatures and rain in the forecast, they wondered whether this was the last outing of the season. After the skiing, they went to a nearby Tim Horton’s for lunch.

Sunday Mar 1, 2026 - Ski Heritage East

Five skiers took part in the cross-country ski outing on the Ski Heritage East Trail in Orléans. Leaving at 12:30 p.m. from the parking lot behind Cairine Wilson High School, the group headed east. It was a cold and sunny day. Due to drop in temperature after the mild weather the previous day, the trail was icy in places, but had been groomed in the morning. The group skied as far as Tenth Line Road and returned the same way--a total distance of 6.4 km.

Tuesday Feb 24, 2026 - Larose Forest

Six hardy souls ventured to Larose Forest--about 30 minutes east of Ottawa--to ski on its well-groomed trails.  Despite the return of colder weather (about -14°C), they headed east from parking lot P7.  The trails were in fairly nice condition. There were a few icy spots and there were pine needles and leaves on the track in some places. After about 5.5 km, the group turned back. One member skiied ahead to a small cabin, and the group agreed that a future trip would head there for lunch. After the ski, the members went to Boboul Pizza in Limoges for a hearty lunch.

Saturday Feb 21, 2026 - P9-P8 Gatineau Park

A route change due to overnight snow was just fine for the 7 x-country skiers that came out on a mild Saturday morning to ski "the Doldrums" - the north loop parkway between P9 & P8 parking lots. It's always a gamble with parking lots being full on weekends and we chose the largest lot (P9) to start from. The 6.4 km out/back route was well groomed and, with 4 classic tracks, allowed us to chat and ski side-by-side. The turn-around point at P8 was busy with skiers and the parking lot was full, so we were glad we chose the P9 start point. Back to P9 was just as enjoyable a ski, and we decided on a post ski coffee stop at La Trappe a Fromage - a great deli on Old Chelsea Rd. Coffee, soup, sandwich and dessert....a nice way to end the day. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Wednesday Feb 18, 2026 - Rideau Winter Trail

Starting at the Rideau Sports Centre on Donald Street, three skiers skied about 7.5 km.  Conditions were soft, but it was a lovely morning. In the future, it would be good to try a different starting point so people don't need to take their skis off several times.

Tuesday, Feb 17, 2026 - Mont Ste Marie

Seven downhillers made the drive up to Mont Ste Marie. The overcast foggy drive up quickly turned to sunny 5C weather and skiing went well into the afternoon. The spring-like weather is a sign that changes in snow & weather conditions are closer than we think. Trip Leader : Bill Danson

Sunday February 15, 2026 Ottawa West  Winter trail/Carling Ave & Rifle Rd

Four skiers made it out on a mild sunny Sunday afternoon to ski the 5.5km trail #10 loop towards Shirley's Bay/Ottawa River. The first 2 km was on a perfectly groomed trail but the next 2.5km were well-tracked but not recently groomed, so it felt a little rough. Trail # 10 takes in some nice views of the Ottawa River and we stopped numerous times to take in the scenery. An apres-ski stop at a nearby cafe ended the day. Trip leader: Bob Cavan

Thur. Feb. 5/26 - P17 to Brown's Cabin
Three RA skiers met at P17 near Wakefield. It was a sunny winter day, -11°C and just a little breeze. We skied along blue trail 52. One skier decided to turn back just before the intersection at trail 57 (Brown’s cabin), but enjoyed her return trip. The other two skiers continued on trail 52 for a couple of extra kilometres before heading into Brown’s cabin for a break. From there, it was a quick ski back to P17 for a total of 10 km. A beautiful day to be outside!

Tue. Feb. 3/26 - Ski Heritage East Trail
Six RA skiers took advantage of the milder temperatures to ski on the Ski Heritage East Trail along the Ottawa River.  Leaving from P27 on the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, they headed west along the well-groomed trail. They skied as far as the boat launch, where they saw the spot where people sometimes swim, but which was frozen over. They met an enthusiastic fellow-skier who said she encourages everyone, particularly seniors, to keep moving. On the way back, the skiers observed where beavers had gnawed on several trees and saw some ducks taking advantage of a bit of open water beside the trail. In all, the participants skied about 9 km. Afterwards, they had a hearty lunch at the Clocktower Brew Pub on Beechwood Avenue.

Cathy, Anke, Chris, Wendy, Jaime, Louise, Dan, Gord, Karl, and Roger wouldn't have missed it for the world. A sunshine perfect Meet n' Ski day at Edelweiss proving the old saying, 'the more the merrier'. Sun. Feb. 1/26 - DH Meet'n'Ski at Calabogie
Well today was a double bonus day for the geriatric members of the club and a great day for the non members, aka everybody else. A little nippy but full sun all day, uncrowded hills and excellent snow conditions. That is bonus #1. Bonus #2 was we skied for free. Their computer wasn't working for the young at heart so we got free passes. I know I know, you can't wait to get to the magic milestone, but don't rush it. Being partially deaf is no treat, peeing isn't what it used to be, oh, skip that one. Anyway, a marvelous day on the best 'local' hill in the region.

See you at Edelweiss on Wednesday,

Roger

Fri. Jan. 30/26 - Chelsea Community Trail
Six RA skiers enjoyed a portion of the Chelsea Community Trail in glorious sunshine with excellent conditions under foot.  The trail is the old railway bed from the former steam train to Wakefield. We started at Kirk’s Ferry, where there is an interpretive panel explaining the history of the ferry, and headed south.  We passed cottages (grand and modest), a sailing club, a little library and creative animal and bird sculptures made my a local artist from the spikes of the old railway line. The views across the river were stunning and we even saw a hardy soul cutting ice slabs from the river and creating a circular fort, maze or a piece of art with the jagged pieces. After skiing for about 6 km, two people went further, we enjoy a delicious lunch and more camaraderie at the Trappe au Fromage in Old Chelsea.

Thurs. Jan. 22/26 - Britannia Trail
Eight RA Skiers set forth from the Britannia Park ‘Trolley Station’ around 10:45 a.m.  We welcomed new member, Angela, and guest Joan.   The weather was almost perfect with a mostly blue sky...happily the sun made an appearance in the morning to counter the cool westerly breeze.  We headed west along the main east-west bike path - now beautifully groomed for cross country skiers.  Our destination was Andrew Hayden Park and for those with lots of energy, the Nepean Sailing Club.  All were reached on groomed trails within 45 minutes when we turned around and headed back.  This time our destination was the well known Beachconer’s Café, located just off the bike path at the entrance to Britannia Village. Skiers and cyclists will be interested to know that Beachconer’s has expanded its operation and taken over the neighbouring hair salon!  Now there is plenty of room for its numerous patrons.  The café is open Thursday to Sundays for the time being.  Note to future visitors:  the menu featured mainly beverages and no lunch but a tasty breakfast egg/bacon sandwich.  We parted ways around 1:30 p.m., happy to have got a good ski in before the polar vortex arrives this weekend.

Sat.  Jan. 17, 2026 - Heritage East Trail
Seven members met today at P27 on George Etienne Cartier Parkway.

We skied on the Heritage East ski trail towards the east. The snow conditions were  perfect!  Nice new snow coverage, white everywhere! You could never tell we were so close to the city. We covered about 6 km.

Afterwards we went to eat delicious Indian food at Raahi Indian  Dhaba on Canotek Road, a little hidden place in the  heart of the Industrial park. It was a beautiful Saturday outing spent with a cheerful group.

Downhill Meet n' Ski - Mont Cascades, Thursday January 8, 2026
The spring-like temperatures were a surprise for the 5 skiers that met at Mont Cascades and the first thing we did was take a layer of clothing off to avoid being "too hot" ! I don't recall a January ski when we used those words!! Another surprise for the two 80+ persons was the $10 day pass - it does not get any cheaper than that anywhere else in the area!!The new lodge at Mont Cascades is the largest of all the local area ski hills and the number of other skiers there were few so we had ample space to lounge around. All lifts were running and, with both sides of the mountain open, we had lots of choice runs on perfectly groomed snow. After a lunch break, we were ready to repeat some of the runs we did in the morning and most skiers stayed right up to 2:30pm before heading home. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Thurs.  Jan. 8, 2026 - Relais Plein Air to Blvd Cité des Jeunes
Four RA Ski Club members  (Jane H., Gillian H. Susan G. and Jane M.) enjoyed an easy ski from Relais Plein Air (P2) in Gatineau Park over the flats to Blvd de la Cité des Jeunes. The trail conditions were exceptionally good thanks to a fresh dump earlier this week. The one and a half hour outing was followed by a tasty lunch and good chat at the canteen at Relais.  Although we avoided a busy Saturday there were still many skiers out and an almost full parking lot, thanks no doubt to excellent snow conditions. We were all happy to get a good ski in before the warmer weather and rain arrives.

Downhill Meet n' Ski - Calabogie, Sunday January 4, 2026

The frosty air didn't stop the 5 hardy RA skiers who went up the valley to Calabogie on Sunday. The sun came out as we arrived and runs were in excellent shape. The early birds were on the hill and with all lifts operating and skiers moving fast....so fast that the later arrivals never saw the early birds all day !! Once the clouds started coming in after 1pm and ice started appearing on some runs, it was time to call it a day. Trip leader: Bob Cavan

Friday Jan. 2, 2025 - P19 Leitrim Road
A chilly -25C overnight didn't stop the 5 skiers that turned out for the first ski of 2026. By the 10:30am start time from the P19 parking lot, the sun was out, the chill in the air was was no longer there, and the ski trail was in great groomed condition. We moved easily along the well marked trail, and were at the western end of the trail in no time. The turn towards the east took us through open clearings that still showed wind damage from the 2022 derecho storm. The group decided to take a longer route back as the warm sun & great snow conditions were just too good to pass up. Back at the parking lot, most of the group felt a lunch stop was in order and headed to a nearby south Ottawa restaurant.

Downhill Skiing - Mount Pakenham, December 23, 2025
Mount Pakenham, the smallest local hill, delivered some big powder snow conditions for the 4 RAski'rs + 1 young guest who made it out on a mild pre-Christmas day. The 9 open runs had just enough terrain to make the trip worthwhile and the 4-hour pass was fully used by most. The snow coming down just added to the feeling that a good ski season is well underway.

 Cross Country Skiing - Gatineau Park P8 - P9, December 13, 2025

The first x-country ski outing for the season is in the books as 7 skiers made it out on a snowy day getting their ski legs in shape. The P8 parking lot in Gatineau Park is often overflowing with cars on a weekend but we got lucky and we all found spots and started skiing right on time. Whatever wind chill in the air seemed to disappear as we started the long gentle incline up the north loop parkway towards P9. The gentle snow falling made for great conditions and it didn't take long to ski the 3.5km to our turnaround point at the P9 entrance. After a pause for water & snacks, we started back on the same route. We seemed to find our legs working better on the way back - or maybe it was because there was a long downhill at the end- and we were at our cars in no time. The smiling faces was a sign that we all were happy coming out on a snowy day and we finished up with a warm coffee and lunch in Chelsea.

DH Ski - 1st DH of the Season, Camp Fortune, Dec. 5, 2025
Five plus one RASki members came out on a cold but tolerable first day of the year to Camp Fortune to get the new season underway. Nobody complained of the cold because being forewarned we all were dressed well. The manmade snow was rather coarse and called for alertness. The snow blasters were all pumping at full blast on Clifford. I'd rate the day a 7.

5 + 1 ?   We met #6 as we were removing our gear at the end of our day.

Hiking - Gatineau Park P16 to Healey Cabin, Nov 27, 2025

The last scheduled hike for 2025 had a poor weather forecast of cold blowing snow, but the 6 hikers that made the trip to P16 were greeted with mild temperatures, no snow and almost no wind - a surprisingly pleasant day. The trail from P16 to Healey cabin starts with a long incline and the hikers who were dressed for the forecasted poor weather were soon taking hats & mitts off and zipping off layers to cool off. Even on the upper part of the trail, walking conditions were mostly dry earth with a light snow cover and the 4.1 km trek up to Healey went quickly. The cabin was comfortably warm with a fire still burning in the woodstove and the group enjoyed a leisurely stop for snacks. Some chocolate snacks were even awaiting our arrival from cabin visitors earlier in the day. The trip back on the same trail went quickly and the long incline on the way up looked like an even longer descent when we looked down to the bottom of the trail. Nobody was in a rush to go home just yet, and the group went for coffee (and more for some) at the nearby Oiseau Bleu Cafe. Will we be still hiking or skiing next week ?? Either way, today was a good way to end November's schedule. Trip Leader:Bob Cavan

Hiking - Wakefield Mill to Brown Lake cabin, Nov 20, 2025

Despite a change of destination a few days prior due to trail construction, nine hikers made the drive up to the historic Wakefield Mill to hike out 3.5km to Brown Lake cabin, and return same route. The wide trail was in excellent condition with no slippery spots from overnight freezing, and the trees all had a shiny glaze of frost from the fog earlier in the morning. The Brown Lake cabin is a popular ski trail destination and there were a few spots where ski tracks were visible left over from the previous week's 20cm. snowfall. But, apart from a couple of other hikers, we had the trail and cabin to ourselves. After a quick stop at the cabin for snacks, and return on the same route, we were back at the Wakefield Mill for coffee & dessert and a warm way to end the day.

Hiking - RA Centre to Fletcher Gardens/ Arboretum Nov 7, 2025

The trip leader watched the rain radar closely to see how much time the group had for our scheduled hike, and the decision to go ended up being the right call for the 11 hikers who came out today. Starting at the RA, we made our way over the Carleton U. Rideau river pedestrian bridge and then to Hartwell lockstation to cross over the canal and up into Fletcher Gardens. While floral displays were at their seasonal end, the garden volunteers were out cleaning up the flower beds, and bird watchers along with other hikers were out enjoying the fall scenery. A short trail away, we were in the Arboretum stopping along the way to look at commemorative plaques on trees, one of which that has a personal connection to one of our hikers. Taking paths and wooded trails, we found our way back to Carleton U. where we stopped for lunch at the alumni pub " Mike's Place" named after 1970's Chancellor of Carleton U. amd former Prime Minister, Lester B."Mike" Pearson. Quite a few of our group remembered their student days at Carleton which made for some interesting conversations at the lunch table. A short hike back across the Rideau river pedestrian bridge and we were back a tthe RA in plenty of time to avoid the rain that started 30 minutes later. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Hiking  - Relais plein air to Pink Lake Oct. 29, 2025
The RA Ski and Outdoor Club's hike from Relais plein air to Pink Lake took place on a beautiful Fall day with fourteen hikers, including three new members who set the perfect pace so pleased were they to be here that they didn't even realize they were actually in the lead. Shortly into our hike we came upon a group of 8 to 10  five year old children and their caretaker, all grinning happily . . . ???? . . . .then at a given signal we were pleasantly surprised to be serenaded by the children with a lovely welcoming song to start our day. Twenty five people just had a serendipitous moment, it was great.

Moving along one of our hikers unfortunately tripped on a tree root and fell flat out and needed a little first aid, expertly supplied by Paula and Mike. The situation soon under control, eleven of us continued on to Pink Lake through the naked but still beautiful forest while the others returned to the start point.

There had been some confusion at the beginning of the hike wherein the planned route had to be altered due to a now closed trail, but by following trails 27, 5, 15, and 35 we made it to Pink Lake where we had our lunch. By popular vote, two verbal opinions and nine silent Sam's, we returned via the closed-to-automobile parkway until it linked up with trail 5 at which point it was back to Relais pleins air for coffee, snacks, and tales. The smile factor was rated high and all agreed it was a great day. Thanks for coming everybody.

Hiking  - Gatineau Park Cabin Cruise, Oct. 24, 2025
Fourteen RAski members and guests departed Keogan parking lot for an 8 km Cabin Cruise- a tour of the 4 cabins along Ridge Road/trail #1 in Gatineau Park. Due to Gatineau Park roadways having noon hour openings, the hike start time had to be moved from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, which worked out in our favour as morning showers lasted until near noon. The sun appeared to kick-off our start at Keogan cabin which had a woodstove already warming up the place for some mountain bikers on the trails. A few hundred meters up the trail,  we arrived at Shilly Shally - the smallest but one of the most scenic places on Ridge Road. Up the "Khyber Pass" - an aptly-named narrow, steep section of the trail and we were soon at Huron cabin. Passing by Champlain Lookout, we trekked on a further km to Western cabin for a lunch stop with a view of the Ottawa Valley and hills beyond. The walk back was along the same route but just as scenic the second time through. A great group outing on a great Fall day.

Biking  - 9/11 Monuments Tour, Oct. 9/25
The last scheduled bike ride of the season started out in cool conditions but soon warmed up once the group of 7 cyclists were underway. The 18km ride toured three locations in Beechwood cemetery and downtown that have monuments and plaques dedicated to the 9/11 tragedy. The ride through Beechwood with rows and rows of headstones to view the memorial stone with the names of the 24 Canadians who died that day was a sombre reminder of the event 24 years ago. The ride out of Beechwood towards downtown over the bridges over the Rideau river and canal had splendid views and we stopped a few times to take in the scenery. The next stop was at City Hall courtyard where the plaque honoring firefighters who died in New York that day was one of many inscriptions on display on the Wall of Honour. Crossing the canal once again, we took in the plaque outside the American Embassy dedicated to the peoples of all nations who were impacted that day.

Before lunch in the Market, we did a side trip up and around Kiweki Point crossing another bridge , followed after lunch by crossing 3 more bridges over Green island and a street route through Rockliffe before arriving back at our cars. A wonderful last RAski ride of the season !!

Biking  - Mousette Park to Aylmer Marina, Oct. 2, 2025
Six people braved the early morning chill to ride from Moussette Park to Alymer.  It was a brisk start to a wonderful day.  Full sunshine and the temps rose to about 17 by the time we stopped at the beach to have our lunch (along with some pretty annoying wasps!).  We did a meander around the Alymer neighborhood, before lunch.  Returning to Mousette about 2 pm.  I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely fall day and unfortunately one of the last bike outings this season.

Hike to King Mountain, Sept. 26/25
The fall colours were lovely as 13 hikers set out from the P7 parking lot in Gatineau Park towards King Mountain. They followed trail 30 to trail 8 and then to trail 37—the King Mountain Trail.  The trails are well maintained and signed, although care needed to be taken when crossing wet rocks. The cloudy weather soon turned sunny, and the group stopped for lunch at the scenic lookout with its splendid views of the Ottawa Valley. They then completed the loop back to the P7 parking lot. During the two-hour hike, the group covered 6.9 km, with 200 m of elevation gain.  Afterwards, several hikers stopped for refreshments at the Chelsea Pub.

Biking  - Russell to Embrun, Sept. 17/25
Sixteen members of the RA Ski and Outdoor club rode the 20 km round trip New York Central Rail trail from the west end of Russell to the east end of Embrun and back.  This trail, converted from a railroad bed to a multi use trail in 1979 was built for rail transport in 1898 and used until 1957.

Members ended the trip with a BBQ at trip leader Gord Chamberlain’s home in Russell. Good times and good food was had by all.

Walk Aug. 23/25 - Ambassadors'Homes in Rockcliffe
Twelve of us took a stroll in Rockcliffe village to see 22 of the ambassador's residences, plus two other homes of interest.  We had rest stops in Rockliffe Park and the Rockcliffe public library.  After, we stopped at the Tavern on the Falls for lunch.  On the way back to Glen's place, we stopped to see "Roger's tree stump".  (You have to ask him.)  Everyone behaved themselves this time. 7.6 km round trip.

The map, showing our route, is on the RA Ski website in the Photos section. Leader: Glen Campbell

Biking Aug. 20/25 - Osgoode Rail Trail

The overnight rainy weather came close to postponing the bike trip from Bakkers GeneTheral store to Osgoode on the rail trail, but 12 cyclists gambled that the rain would would stay away and we won. The gravel trail was dry and the cool breeze helped us on our way. The 120 year old rail trail has a storied history of moonshine stills, folklore visits from Al Capone & J. Edgar Hoover, and we could almost hear the faint whistle of the steam trains from years ago that travelled that route - or was that just Roger Duffy blowing a wood toy whistle ?!! Before long we were in Osgoode at No Go Coffee shop right on the trail where enjoyed a lunch break. On the way back, we stopped at SunTech Greenhouses just off the trail. There were rows and rows of tomatoes, cucumbers, and  spices hydroponically  grown with bees pollinating the plants. The gift shop had lots of vegetable products for sale and some of us loaded up our pannier bags with goodies. More goodies were waiting at Bakkers General store where we finished our ride. Biking Aug. 14/25 - Bate Island to Aylmer
Ten of us met at Bate Island for a lovely, shaded ride along the Voyageurs Pathway passed the Deschenes Rapids to the Parc de l'Imaginaire at the Aylmer Marina where we enjoyed a picnic lunch at the beach. It was a beautiful, blue sky kind of day without the heat and humididty of recent days. After lunch we agreed to extend our ride to the end of Chemin Queens Park, a quiet, country road with beautiful, waterfront houses. From there some of us explored the old rail line, within a young forest, running parallel to the Ottawa River. There were treasures within – three in-situ wood carvings: wetland birds, an owl and woodpecker, and finally a very friendly looking bear. See photos on the web. Quite a find! We eventually found our way back to the Marina where we regrouped and followed our tracks to Bate Island for refreshments, and more good cheer with friends. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day for this ride. Great fun, thanks to all who came along.

Baseball Aug. 8/25 - Ottawa Titans
It was a perfect night for a baseball game, but unfortunately the Titans were clobbered by Quebec City 11-3. However, it was fun to watch the game with seven other RA Ski friends. Topping it off was a fireworks display at the end of the game.

Theatre Aug. 5, 2025 - Odyssey Theatre "The Girl with No Hands"
Eight of us enjoyed the Odyssey Theatre's production in Strathcona Park. It was a perfect evening for outdoor theatre - no rain and a pleasant temperature. After, we went to the Father & Son's pub, however it was closed. My iPhone lied to me, saying the pub was open to midnight. Organizer: Glen Campbell

Biking July 26, 2025 - Roger's Roddle, St. Lawrence River
Finally on the fourth attempt the 2025 Roddle took place on one of the hottest days of summer. The previous three attempts to hold the Roddle were cancelled due to very unfavourable weather but a mere 30+C degree day was not going to hold thirteen dedicated riders from biking today. And we all were glad we did. Meeting at and exploring the Osgoode Township Museum in Vernon provided an interesting start to our day. Few had ever been to a rural museum so there was lots to see and it quickly became apparent that ingenuity was a mainstay for successful farming a century ago. The stump puller for example, a monstrous contraption, replaced today by a stump grinder that is not much bigger than a wheelbarrow, a chain saw that must weigh almost as much as a small man, can now be picked up with one hand and started by flipping the switch of its battery powered electric motor. The contrasts between then and now all so very apparent.

On to Morrisburg and with our lawn chairs arranged in a circle under a huge tree we ate our picnic lunches. A wonderful opportunity for our two new friends Lorella and France to meet the group. Lunch over, off we rode along the wide, smooth, not too busy, Lakeshore Drive where we passed by many fine homes, a campground, an iceberg . . . no wait . . that's not an iceberg, that's a salt pile. We continued on for 9.5 kms at which point we voted not to continue on to the lock station at Iroquois. Backtracking along the same route we returned to Morrisburg, stopping to read the pathway signs describing the major effect the construction of the St Lawrence Seaway had had on the town in the late 50's. The Roddle over, we broke up into three groups, some went swimming, some stayed for an ice cream cone, and others went for a beer. We had a great day. Thanks for coming everyone.

Hiking July 23, 2025 - Poet's Pathway #2
Eight brave souls braved the beautiful weather and hiked about 7 kms from Meridian Theater to Simply Biscotti on Colonnade. The vast majority of the walk was on natural trail or on quiet shared pathway along the Nepean River. Lunch was at Simply Biscotti. 3 poems, 1 grey heron and 12 cormorant and "Archive", a house floating 20 feet off the ground, were highlights of the trip.

Bike July 18, 2025 Chelsea- Old Sawmill Rd/Browncrest Farm

Twelve cyclists made it out on a beautiful day to ride a 12km section of the Chelsea-Wakefield rail trail. Starting at the Meredith Community Centre in Chelsea, we easily found the trail and headed north on the well maintained pea-gravel surface which meanders along the Gatineau River. We found ourselves stopping on the trail quite often to look at boats and river scenery. After days and days of stifling heat, today's cool breeze and shade along the river was a welcome relief and we quickly arrived at our picnic lunch spot near a barn alongside the rail trail where cool shade awaited. The return trip was on the same route and we had many other cyclists on the trail with us, including a group from the Kanata-Nepean bike club that some us knew.  A new micro-brewery close to the end of the ride was too nice to pass up, and everyone agreed that was a great final waystop. It's just a coincidence that the trip leader chooses bike routes with a winery or a Brewery along the route. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Bike July 3, 2025 Kanata - Kin Winery, Carp

The early morning rain was threatening cancellation of the bike ride from Kanata to the KIN Winery in Carp but, magically, by our 10:30am start time the sky was clear, the roads dry, and our13 cyclists started making their way along the 12km route to Carp. The route was on pathways and quiet roads all the way there and we arrived at the winery right on time for our noon lunch stop. Of course, stopping at a winery means there is delicious wine tasting to go along with our delicious meal. We were not the only bike group stopping for lunch there and we chatted with their group who also happened to have some fellow skiers that we knew. The time passed quickly but so did the nice sunny weather and we realized that the darkening sky was not a good omen for our return trip. Although the wind was at our backs and we were moving quickly, about half-way back our luck ran out and the rain, or "warm snow" as one skier remarked, started and we ducked under tree canopy shelter until the worst of the rain passed by.  It wasn't long before we started back on the road which was mainly downhill at this point and, even though the roads were wet, the air was warm and dry and we got back to our cars hardly feeling that it had rained on our parade. The good company, good food, and good wine made up for the weather and we all enjoyed the day. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Baseball June 27, 2025 - Ottawa Titans
Four RA skiers enjoyed the Ottawa Titans baseball game on June 27th. The rain held off, and the Titans beat New Jersey 7-3.

Bike June 12, 2025 Relais Plein Air - Chelsea

Ten cyclists came out on a blustery day to ride up bike paths and quiet roads to Chelsea from  the Relais Plein Air in Hull. The x-country skiers were familiar with the venue with a year-round cafe and direct access to the ski & bike trails and, for some others, the route was new. While the trip leader promised only small hills closer to Chelsea, he forgot about the BIG hill in the first kilometre. Oops....at least it wasn't at the end of the ride. The route up was out of the wind and the 7km ride didn't take long to our lunch stop at Tonique Cafe. We beat the noon hour lunch crowd and were quickly served. The ride back was mostly on the same route and we  enjoyed a downhill ride with the wind at our back. A post-ride chat in the cafe at Relais Plein Air ended our day. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

June 7, 2025: Tour of Governor-General's Residence & Greenhouses

Twelve of us arrived at the Governor-General's residence just as it opened, so we avoided the crowds and lineups. We headed straght to the greenhouses, again to avoid a lineup.  As we entered the first greenhouse, the participants were assigned the task of finding the 12 little toy dinosaurs hidden among the plants.  The flowers were gorgeous, and, as well, there were bananas and pineapples ripening.  Next we toured the rooms - the tent room, the awards room, the private room where the GG and Prime Minister meet, and the ballroom.  Once outside we saw the tree that King Charles planted, a totem pole, and trees planted by US President Kennedy, and Russian presidents Gorbavhov and Putin.  Then it was off to the Tavern at the Falls for lunch.  Photos are on the web here.

I'm happy to report that all the participants behaved themselves, and that we didn't lose anyone again this year.  Leader: Glen Campbell

Hike May 29, 2025 Madahoki Farm - Lime Kiln Ruins

All morning and up until 10:59am the rain was coming down steadily but, at the 11am start of our hike, the rain miraculously stopped and the 6 hikers didn't have a drop of rain the rest of the day. The start of the trail at Madahoki Farm was a little rough from the long wet spring but the NCC portion of the trail all the way to the Lime Kiln  was in good condition with very few water-filled spots. The main structure at the Lime Kiln ruins had some fallen rocks that had safety fencing preventing close viewing but we still stopped for a snack and break which was surprisingly bug-free After our return on the same trail to the farm, we found all the horses out in the corrals and staff in a joyous mood as a foal had been born earlier that day. The horses at this farm are unique descendants of wild ponies used by aboriginal peoples centuries ago and there is actually a registration system similar to a birth certificate for these prized animals. After a visit to the gift shop and chat with staff, we departed still surprised how we avoided the rain. Trip Leader: Bob Cavan

Hike May 21 - Gatineau Culture Trail
Extra! Extra! Hear all about it on TVA News!
A group of seven of us got culture on the "Gatineau Culture Trail" today. It turned out to be an interesting day because we were one day before the official opening for the trail this year. That meant we got to meet an artist who was working on "flackings", an artistic band-aid for pavement. While we were observing, a local TV news crew asked if one of our party would say a few words for that evening's 6 PM news. The article aired on the TVA channel. Our group can be seen in the background as Luc is interviewed. We were exposed to a wide variety of art works over a 5.5 km walk through Old Hull. We saw a mix of art, culture and were exposed to the efforts being made to revitalize the Old Hull area. And we touched a piece of the old Eiffel Tower! A la prochaine!

Biking May 8, 2025 - Bells Corners to Stittsville
Five RAski members made it out for the first bike ride of the season. It was a chilly 8 C  at the  start but as soon as we got in tree cover out of the wind,  we felt a bit warmer. The pea-gravel trail from Bells Corners to Stittsville was in great shape and we rolled along nicely - not too fast or slow - to our coffee stop 10km away. Brews and Blues Cafe is right on the rail trail and there is a large outdoor seating area that is welcoming to cyclists and we enjoyed a snack and warm brew. The trip back was on the same trail and the slight downhill and warming weather made for an easy ride. A few members had a post-ride coffee and a bite to eat at the nearby Tim Horton. A good start to the cycle season.

Hike April 24, 2025 Rockliffe Rockeries & Beechwood Famous Canadians

Light rain at the start did not stop 12 members and 1 guest from coming out for the first club hike of the year. From P4, we quickly accessed the ravine trail taking us to McKay Lake. Our first photostop on a boardwalk was a signal for the rain to stop and the sun to instantly appear. The route out of the trail and up into Beechwood cemetery was now dried out and we began our tour of notable gravesites. Mayors, Prime Ministers, nationally known persons, and prominent Ottawa citizens are laid to rest here along with military and law enforcement troops. The cemetery grounds are immaculate and the early blooms of spring flowers were everywhere. The trail back on urban trails and quiet roads took us up through the Rockeries - a park along the edge of the Rockliffe escarpement. From a rainy cool start to a sunny warm finish- a nice start to the hiking season. Trip Leader - Bob Cavan

DH/XC Multi-day Sunday River, Maine Mar 3-7, 2025

Eight RAski members made the 6 hour drive to Sunday River,Maine with two getting there the day before to get an extra ski day. The first ski day for the main group was Tuesday and it was a perfect sunny day with well groomed trails and minimal crowds. With 8 peaks, 139 trails and 19 lifts, there was plenty of choice for everyone. Our ski-in/ski-out hotel had a bit of a surprise for choice of breakfast - the choice being a $30 buffet or nothing. This caught us by surprise but a trip to the grocery store 10km away was the alternative  breakfast solution. Dinner on Tuesday night was another surprise as we found out the vast majority of local restaurants are closed on Tuesday. A few calls and online searches found a couple of choices that worked out and the day ended with planning for the terrible weather coming in the next two days.

At 9am on the second day, the sky was overcast and the feeling was that we would start out and ski until the rain forced us in. The morning went by with heavy mist in the air but not the heavy rain forecast. Most skiers stayed out until mid-afternoon before wet clothes drove us in. Hot tubs and cold drinks filled out the rest of the second day.

The third day weather forecast was only marginally better than the second day but we started out anyway with a plan to quickly return if the rain came....but the mountain mist lifted and temperatures rose to 9C to make it a great spring ski day.

Three ski days out of three....so much better than what the weather forecasts had predicted.

A lovely group meal followed at a local restaurant and we returned to our hotel only to have power go out for a few hours.

Travel day back to Ottawa was in blustery winds and some traffic delays near Montreal but all good.

Saturday, March 8, 2025 XC P19 to Lusk Cabin/End of Lac Philippe

The RA ski and outdoor club xc ski program combined forces with The Ottawa Outdoor Club to offer two routes for this ski.  On this sunny Saturday, six skiers took the route from P19 to the end of Lac Philippe.  Some of the group stopped at a crowded Renaud cabin on the return trip, while a couple of others chose to return directly to P19.

Meanwhile, three skiers turned off onto trail 54 to Lusk Cabin.  It was the first time on this route for two of the skiers.  We enjoyed lunch in the toasty warm Lusk Cabin.  The return trip was much faster due to the many downhills back to trail 55.  Conditions were great, except for debris on the tracks in a few spots.

Another RA skier had a flat tire on the road to Lac Philippe, but was able to enlist a local family company to change the tire. Cheers for local businesses! The skier still managed to fit in a good ski.

Tuesday, February 25 - Larose Forest
It was a mild morning when five members set out on the well-groomed trails in Larose Forest. Located about 45 minutes east of downtown Ottawa near the village of Limoges, Larose Forest has some 29 km of cross-country ski trails on relatively flat terrain. Given the mild conditions, the snow was a little soft. The group skied at a leisurely pace through the peaceful woods, stopping at one of the picnic tables along the way and returning by the same route for a total of about 9 km. The trip ended just as the rain began and four members went to have lunch at Boboul Pizza in Limoges. Trip leader: Michael Dewing

Wednesday Feb 19 - Rideau Winter Trail

Seven RA XC Skiers, including two first-time participants with the club,  headed out for a ski on the Rideau Winter Trail on this chilly but sunny day.  Parking was a bit of a challenge, so 2 skiers met us along the trail. The section between Donald St and Hurdman hadn't been groomed and, it being a multi-use trail, the trail was a bit chewed up.  South of the Hurdman bridge there were groomed tracks and I'm sure the volunteer groomers have been frustrated by the wind continually covering up their work.  It was a beautiful day to be outside!  Six skiers enjoyed lunch at The Bridge Public House, located in the Rideau Sports Centre on Donald Street.  Trip Leader: Jane Hilliard

 XC Mid-week
Feb. 12-14, 2025 - Le Grand Lodge, Tremblant
Twenty-five people had registered for the trip to Le Grand Lodge near Tremblant.  Unfortunately, 2 had to cancel due to health reasons.

Last year, we had not enough snow to ski on; this year a substantial snowstorm overnight Wednesday left the trails too deep to ski on that Thursday! Skiing was done on Wednesday and Friday, at the Domaine St. Bernard and Le Petit Train du Nord. A couple of people went downhill skiing at Tremblant on Friday.  A group of us went snowshoeing in the deep snow on Thursday, enjoying a lovely winter day.  Shopping was enjoyed by many. A few never left the hotel, enjoying the facilities, including the pool and hot tub.

Due to the GST holiday, our budget allowed everyone to enjoy a drink in the bar.  The food was excellent, even though the service was slow.  Trip leader: Louise Cameron

Saturday, Feb. 8 - Brown's Cabin

Nine RA XC Skiers took advantage of a warm, sunny Saturday, to ski to Brown cabin on expertly groomed trails. Some proceeded from P17 on Trail #s 52 and 57 directly to Brown Cabin. Others continued on #52 as far as a strategically located bench before backtracking to #57 to join the others for lunch and camaraderie. The smiling faces in the photos illustrate perfectly that the participants were having a terrific time, pleased that the NCC has opened up Brown cabin to the skiing and snowshoeing public.  Trip Leaders: Diane and Rob

Meet n' Ski Feb 7, 2025 - Camp Fortune

Eight RAski members + 2 guests were out on a sunny but windy day at Camp Fortune. The trip was postponed from the day previous due to weather but the new snow and more available runs made the day. Luckily the wind was not in our faces for the chairlift rides but some downhill runs felt like we were being pushed uphill and barely moving due to the strong winds. It is always the mid-day coffee/lunch breaks that allow us to catch up with news with our fellow skiers and the trips that people have planned are always impressive to hear. Some skiers stayed well into the afternoon  as the sun and ski conditions were great before packing up and heading home. Trip leader: Bob Cavan

Tuesday, February 4, 2025 - Ski Heritage East

Seven club members took part in the cross-country ski outing on the Ski Heritage East trail.  Leaving from P27 on the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, they headed east on the freshly groomed trail.  It was a mostly sunny day, but with strong winds blowing off the Ottawa River, they decided to take the upper trail through the woods, rather than the exposed trail along the River.  They crossed the bridge over Green’s Creek and made it to the look-out point with a great view up the River.  They then continued on to the border of Orleans, where this part of the groomed trail ends. They returned by the same route, for a total of 6.75 km.  Some of the members then went for lunch at the Clocktower Brew Pub in New Edinburgh.  Trip leader: Michael Dewing

Thursday, January 30, 2025 – Chelsea Community Trail

On Thursday, January 30, 8 RA skiers explored a trail that was new to most – the Chelsea Community Trail; it is the old steam train route to Wakefield.  Heading north from Chelsea with excellent conditions under foot and the trail virtually to ourselves, we passed a wide variety of houses and had many beautiful views of the Gatineau River. We met a couple of dogs and their owners, a class of young Montessori students out for a ski with their teacher and a lady harnessed to her dog who pulled her along the groomed tracks - a real community trail. It was an interesting, easy and very scenic route enjoyed by all.  The more energetic folks covered more ground, but we all returned to the parking lot at the same time!  After, we retired for an equally enjoyable and truly delicious lunch in Old Chelsea at Roberto Pizza Romana, not your ordinary pizza place.  Trip leader: Gillian Huntley

Sat. Jan. 18, 2025 - P16 (Pine Road) to Herridge Cabin
Five brave members of the Cross-Country Ski Program set out from P16 on Saturday, January 18th. The parking lot was full, so we had to park on the road. The temperature was minus 1. We used Red Special wax. It felt like a day in March. The skiing was difficult for everyone. Some were sticking too much to the snow, and others were sliding too much. We made the most of it. Rain and body heat fogged up our glasses as we were coming down from Herridge cabin, but we all had big smiles on our faces. Leader: Marie-Reine Fournier

Fri. Jan. 17, 2025 - Fortune Friday
As many of our skiers were on the bus trip to Tremblant, there were just the 2 of us who met at 10:00.  However, two others started early and were on the lift at 9:00, but they didn't catch up with us. The sunny weather/snow was fabulous. Short or no lineups at the lifts. We skied until 12:00.  Leader: Bill Danson

Sat. Jan. 11, 2025 - P8 to P9
Ten RA Ski Club members managed to squeeze into Parking lot 9 in Gatineau Park on a busy Saturday morning, after finding P8 full and very crowded.  We set off shortly after 12 noon for Parking lot 8, a 6-7 km. run.  P8 to P9 are called the “doldrums” by many skiers but the route is a great place to get your ski legs back in shape without the worry of steep hills or bad falls.  Two skiers managed to find parking in P8 and we met them enroute.  The group headed to Café Biscotti in Old Chelsea for a tasty lunch after our ski.  Despite the lack of snow, trail and track conditions were amazingly good, thanks to milder temperatures and the brilliant NCC grooming crew who perform miracles on Gatineau Park cross country trails!  Jane Maxwell - Trip Leader

Downhill Meet n'Ski

Friday Dec. 20, 2024 - Camp Fortune

It was a Fortune Friday + Meet n' Ski day so we renamed it Festive Friday as it was the last ski outing before Christmas. Four skiers made it out and had some fast runs on Marshall, as well as on Pinault & Allen's Alley. The conditions were very good considering the rain two days previous and the brief sunshine and lack of wind made the ride up the chairlift as well as the ski downhill really comfortable. No line-ups at either the ski lift or the coffee bar :-) Trip leader: Bob Cavan

Cross-Country Skiing

Saturday Dec. 14, 2024 - Gatineau Park P8 to P9

It’s been a few years since the first x-country ski trip on the RAski calendar has had enough snow to make it a go, but two skiers decided to give it a go and it was well worth it. Sunny skies, no wind, lots of fresh snow, excellent grooming and…..no parking issues in the popular P8 start point. It was the first ski of the season for both skiers and the 7.5km distance was just enough to get those legs and arms moving in coordination, and before long we both felt like we were skiing in mid-winter mode. The ski back to P8 was slightly downhill and it flew by. A nice coffee stop in Chelsea, and a chat with a Chelsea Masters skier also enjoying his post-ski coffee rounded out the day.
